Sometimes we lose track of why we got into science. But, at some point, I'm sure we all had grandiose dreams of all the things we were going to accomplish as scientists. Sure, those goals may have changed as we evolved from naive and idealistic undergraduate students to where we are now, but surely there's some big idea that's pushing us, even in the distant background.

So, what is your ultimate career goal? Do you want to win the Nobel Prize? Cure cancer? Build a better mouse trap? What is it that you want to be remembered for career-wise?

Inspiration is a necessary element to any satisfying career. But where do we find it? Is it in those who have come before us? The encouragement and confidence others give? The goals and dreams we have set for the future?

This quarter's Scientiae topic is Inspiring Women in STEM. Contribute your stories of historical or contemporary women in STEM who motivate you. Write about how individuals, male or female, STEM or not, who have encouraged and supported the careers and advancement of women in STEM. Share the things that help you stay focused on your goals as a woman in STEM. Offer anecdotes of how you are inspiring girls and women to get involved and stay involved in STEM.

As always, you can write a new post or pull one from your archives. And feel free to submit more than one!

By the way, we love to hear stories about inspiring women in STEM from non-female bloggers as well :)

Call for first Quarter posts

Scientiae has moved to a quarter system this year, and the first carnival of 2011 will come out around the 20th of March (because I have been slow putting out the call and because I am actually having a few days off(!) around the 15th).

I'd like to encourage lots and lots of posts, so I'm going for a pretty general topic. A truism widely used in one of the fields my research area touches on (way to be vague?) is:

Change is the only constant

and I would like to invite posts on that theme. You might write about changes in your discipline (or in a discipline you like reading about!) since you first began studying it, or about changes in yourself since you began studying science/got your current job/since some arbitrary and personal date. What about changes in the experiences of women in science and as scientists? For example, I'm in my early 40s - and I really wish I'd ignored the advice at school and as an undergrad to not learn to touch-type. Women were told NOT to learn to type because 'you'll end up being treated like a secretary and expected to type up everyone's papers' - nowadays with word processors all academics pretty much do their own typing, and I would love to be able to type correctly (but have been typing badly long enough that I do it quickly and have failed in all attempts so far to unlearn and relearn. Maybe I should try a DVORAK keyboard?).

If you're really busy, why not identify an old post that fits the theme, and submit that? Or submit any piece of writing on your blog which you're proud of, carnivals thrive on variety!

After some discussion in the Scientiae supporters google group, we've decided to move Scientiae to a quarterly system for the year, and then reevaluate whether Scientiae should retire in 2012. We've got hosts for March 15, June 15, and September 15 and December 15. The March 15 host will get the call up soon. Thanks for your continued support of Scientiae!

So I was very sad, when I thought that there were no posts on having fun. It turns out that there were posts but because gmail had instituted a new "confirmation" policy they never got transferred to me.

Call for December Posts: Having Fun

The call for posts for this month's Scientiae Carnival is more than a little late. That is both my fault and my inspiration for this month's Carnival. I'm just back from a trip to Paris and Amsterdam and am behind because (Are you ready for this?) for the whole trip, I didn't work; I just had fun.

You know fun-- like eating take out while hanging out with people you love; watching Angelina Jolie kick butt in "Salt"; walking the streets of Paris with no destination; pedal boating the canals of Amsterdam in the November rain; watching baby JJ as he figures out how to crawl up stairs (ok that was pretty scary). You know fun.

Fun is the theme for this month. What do you do for fun? What's the most fun thing you've ever done? What do you do that makes you smile, giggle, fall on the floor laughing? What's the most fun thing you can imagine doing?

So folks let's have some fun and give each other ideas for new ways to have more fun. Please submit your posts by December 6th and I'll have the carnival up before my December 9th birthday. Feel free to give me some ideas for what I can do to have fun on my birthday.

I'm Ecogeofemme, and I'll be hosting the November carnival at The Happy Scientist.

Day after day on our blogs, we all write about the trials and triumphs of life in science. The guilt, the frustrations, the jackasses. And the gratification, sense of importance, the pride. But when you boil it all down, I wonder,

What is the best part of your job/life as a scientist, and what is the worst part?

How do these things motivate you? Do the good parts function as a carrot and the bad parts a stick? Or are the bad parts simply something you endure knowing that no job is perfect?

As always, women and men both are encouraged to post for the carnival. Of course if this theme don't leave you inspired, feel free to write about something else too. And if you have something you'd like to share but you don't have a blog, I'll consider guest posts on my blog. Get your posts in by midnight (American Samoa time) on October 31. September Scientiae: Call for posts!

I, Karina, have the great pleasure of hosting Scientiae for the month of September at my blog Ruminations of an Aspiring Ecologist. I have been mulling over this month’s theme for more than a year now. During my first field season of data collection in 2009, I spent a lot of time thinking about my research equipment (including what would happen if it failed me) and wondered what types of tools other people rely on for their research. This is the time of year when students and teachers in the northern hemisphere return to school after summer vacation, which often means buying new school supplies. Although I know this may not be the "school supply" buying season for many Scientiae bloggers, I am interested in hearing what supplies you use in your research, teaching, and outreach. What things do you love in the lab? What are you lost without in the field? What computer programs make your life easier every day? What tools are indispensable? What is tried and true?

Your list can be as conventional or unconventional as you see fit to share, from paperclips to particle accelerators. So, without giving your whole research agenda away, what are your favorite school supplies?

Hi everyone! I'm Alyssa, over at Apple Pie and the Universe (formally Mrs. Comet Hunter) and I'll be hosting the August Scientiae. I'm really excited to put one together this year, and I hope that the topic will be fun for everyone!

Summer is a great time to look back on the past year and reflect - or to look forward to the goals for the next year. Last May's carnival, hosted by Endless Possibilities v2.0, had us put together a time capsule of what was going on in our lives during the spring of 2009.

Well, here's a good chance to look back - and forward! If you took part in the May 2009 Scientiae, have a look at your time capsule. What have you accomplished in that time? Are you where you thought you would be over a year ago? If you didn't take part, can you remember what your goals were for the 2009/2010 year? How far have you come since then?

Now the fun part - what is going on in your life right now? What will be happening in six months or a year from now? What are your goals? Are you looking forward to the next year, or dreading it?

Feel free to interpret this in whatever way you'd like - you could do a bullet list of everything, or a snap shot of the more important things going on, or share an anecdote that will allow you to remember the summer of 2010.

Hello! Just a reminder of the call for posts for the July Scientiae Carnival, on the theme of 'Fantasy Institute' (or of course any other relevant topic).

The academic blogosphere is often resounding with complaints about the brokenness of the system, and discussions of the challenges and sometimes outright hostility faced in building a scientific career. This carnival is a chance to make some positive suggestions of how we might make things better.

Why not take some time this weekend to come up with some suggestions? Silly, extreme or serious, fantasy institute can incorporate them all (personally, I favour an ice-cream fridge and a "no-assholes" hiring policy...). I look forward to hearing your brilliant ideas!

Hello, I'm JaneB and I blog over at 'Now, what was I doing?'. And this month I get to host the Scientiae Carnival!

Summer is a good time for day-dreaming and thinking Big Thoughts, free from (some of) the stream of student enquiries, emails and phone calls that disrupt our time during the semester. So for this carnival, I thought it would be fun to revive an old game we played in my grad-lab, 'Fantasy Institute'. The rules of the game are simple - you have been selected as the Director of a newly endowed research institute. It is your job to decide where the institute will be based, its codes of conduct, its structure, and who you will hire.

Dream away! Tell us what would make your institute a haven for scientists. A 'everyone must leave by 5pm' rule? A woodland setting with squirrel feeders? Daily shipments from your favourite supplier?

I've been watching a lot of my friends graduate and defend their theses, and I've been seeing others publish their first papers. Some postdocs I know have gotten their first BIG fellowships, or gotten great grants, and I've seen some awesome faculty get some amazing awards. Some of my friends in STEM industry have completed big projects or have even gotten promotions! One thing I've noticed, through all these accomplishments and successes, is that we don't tend to celebrate our awesomeness nearly enough. We end that now.

It's almost summer, it's the end of the academic year, and I'll be hosting a huge Scientiae party. Come, bring a friend, and share with us your most recent successes and we'll give you a big round of applause! Tell us how you're planning on celebrating once you clear that next hurdle. Or maybe how you celebrated just getting something off your plate, no matter the outcome. Tell us about those humps and bumps you have overcome. Share a story about your grandest STEM victory.

Hi, I'm biochem belle, your humble host for April's Scientiae Carnival! Many thanks again to Amanda for hosting the March edition of the Scientiae Carnival. If you haven't already seen it, go check out people's thoughts on continuity in science. I am thrilled to be hosting the carnival in April and look forward to reading all the submissions. Even though the carnival broadly covers the topic of women in STEM, anyone is welcome to contribute. In fact, one of my favorite dude bloggers, Abel Pharmboy, hosted last year. Now on to this month's topic...

The theme for the spring 2010 national meeting of the American Chemical Society is Chemistry for a Sustainable World.There have been a number of reports, op eds, and blog posts about a diverse range of challenges in science. This phrase prompted me to see them as questions of sustainability. Whether discussing an individual career, a lab, funding, the academic research system, publishing, peer-review, or scientific innovation, at the heart of the issue is often the question of whether current practices are sustainable and what changes need to be made to ensure sustainability. This also brings the theme of April's carnival. From an individual to a more global perspective, definitions, successes, diversity, barriers... what makes--or breaks--sustainability in science?

Hi! I'm Amanda at A Lady Scientist and I'm hosting Scientiae for March. First of all, I'm really pleased that Scientiae is continuing. The carnival is what got me into blogging in the first place.

Now the difficult part: trying to figure out a theme for this month. I've never hosted Scientiae before and I didn't realize how tricky this could be! At last I've settled on a very broad topic: Continuity. The word applies not only to Scientiae (we're on year 3!), but Science, too. To start you all thinking about this topic I looked it up in the OED.

1. the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time
• a state of stability and the absence of disruption

Scientiae's future?

Folks, with your help and support, Scientiae has been going on since March of 2007. That works out to 36 carnivals on all sorts of topics, with a host of hosts and contributors.

But the number of posts submitted to each call for posts has fallen off dramatically, it seems, and we've been having lots of problems with hosts getting carnivals posted on time (and much of this is due to my forgetting to pass the torch in good time each month).

So the question arises: is there still value to having Scientiae? Or should we shut it down as a great community-building tool whose time has come to be let go?

What say you, netizens? Please share your thoughts in the comments, or on your blogs (and leave us a link here). Pass the word that we're trying to assess what the continuing value of Scientiae is, if anything.

I hope to hear from you soon. :-)

Happy New Year! We have successfully (finally :-) ) completed our 2009 year of carnivals. To wit:

January was hosted by acmegirl, and had the theme on opening and closing doors of one's career.

February was hosted by Pat at FairerScience and had as a theme "our dreams for a better, more equitable society."

March was hosted by Liberal Arts Lady, and had as a theme "role models of women making history."

April was hosted by Candid Engineer, and had as a theme "rising to the challenge."

May was hosted by Katherine Haxon at Endless Possibilities v2.0, and asked us to take a snapshot of ourselves in spring 2009 that we could look back on in a few years. (Part 1 and 2.)

June was hosted by ScienceWoman, and had "moving forward" as a theme.

July was hosted by Patchi at My Middle Years, and had as a theme "Mirror, mirror, on the wall..."

August was hosted by Abel Pharmboy at Terra Sigillata, and had as a theme "Summer days, driftin' away..."

September was hosted by Academic at Academic Crossroads, and had as a theme, "Inspiration or desperation?"

October was hosted by Mad Chemist Chick, and had as a theme, "The Road Not Taken."

November and December were rolled into one, co-hosted by Cherish and Jokerine, and was just posted here as a year-end carnival.

Thank you SO SO very much to all of our hosts, and to everyone who contributed a post to this year's set of carnivals. You form the community that so many of us need in the rest of our work -- thank you for writing out there as often as you do.

We now need to think about 2010. I'll write another post in the next day or two on this subject. For now, bask in the glow of a 11 awesome carnivals, and a whole host of fabulous bloggers who write about their experiences doing science, engineering, math, computer science, technology, and all the work that happens in-between. It looks like November's carnival was a little on the sparse side, so we're going to try again. Jokerine and myself (Cherish) will instead co-host the December carnival. Because of the holiday weekend, we're going to push off the deadline for the new carnival to December 14th so that we can publish it on the 15th.

This means that if you wrote a post for the November carnival, don't worry: your submission will be included in the December carnival. This also means that if you would like to write on the November topic (things about which you are thankful for in your work, what gets you through), you can still do that.

Alternatively, if you would like, Jokerine would like to see your 'wishlist': what is it you would like for yourself or others in STEM fields? Stories of cheer are also encouraged (and encouraging!). Jokerine may elaborate more on this shortly.

Please submit your posts in the usual manner. Don't forget the deadline is December 15th. We are looking forward to your submissions!

November Scientiae

I didn't realize how quickly October would come and go, and it's almost time for Scientiae!

The days have really been getting shorter, and sometimes winter makes it hard to stay cheerful. In that light, I'd really like to hear what other people like about being in STEM. If you aren't sure, maybe you could also think about the positive things that get you through the day or week. What makes you happy or makes you laugh? Even a funny story about an experience would be great.

Because I'm running a bit late with the announcement (and probably won't get to it before then), please submit any posts by November 5th so that I'll be able to get it up on the 7th or so.

October 2009--Call for posts!

Hello all!

I, Mad Chemist Chick, will be hosting the October Scientiae Carnival from my Laboratory this month. Fall is in full swing (at least in my little corner of the world) and I find that it usually one of the busiest times for those of us in the STEM disciplines. In academia, mid-terms are approaching with end of the semester activities following soon after. In industry, there seems to be a sprint for the finish as once the holidays hit, it can be impossible to get anything accomplished until the New Year. I hope everyone finds some time to slow down and enjoy this very lovely time of year (after you submit your posts to the carnival of course!)

I found inspiration for this month’s carnival theme after hiking through the woods to see the beautiful fall colors. I am borrowing it from one of New England’s great poets, Robert Frost. The October carnival theme is The Road Not Taken. His poem, The Road Not Taken (1916) is often seen as an expression of individualism though some argue it has a more ironic meaning. For reference, the poem appears below:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Was there a point in your career or research where you were faced with two possible paths? Which one did you chose and why? Do you ever regret that decision? Or perhaps it was the best decision you ever made but you did not realized it until much later. Or have you ever taken a path only to discover it dead-ends or is circular? What did you do next? Have you, like the traveler in the poem, saved a path for another day, in regards to an alternative or second career maybe, and hope to get back to explore it someday? Perhaps some other poem is more apropos to your life and career. Feel free to submit a post on it. As always, other topics that may interest you are also welcome.

Hello hello hello. It's that time for another Scientiae. I'm sorry for showing up a bit late with the call for posts, but with another semester starting I had to get the summer tasks off my plate. Then I had to wait for the muse to strike for a quality theme for this month's Scientiae.

The theme this month: Inspiration or Desperation?

I have been thinking about office decorations as new people move into assorted spaces. Every office seems to be dominated by those people who put up cheesy positive slogans like "Teamwork: Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is a progress, working together is success - Henry Ford" which invariably seem to be balanced against the person posting a message designed to mock these things like "Teamwork: Share Victory, Share Defeat." Invariably, the semester start brings a time to reflect positively or sarcastically. Talk amongst yourselves and submit the posts in the usual fashion by Friday 4 Sept. The carnival will be my Labor Day gift to you.

August Carnival - Call for Posts!

My Y chromosome and I are supremely honored to have been invited by skookumchick to host the August edition of Scientiae, the blog carnival of "stories of and from women in science, engineering, technology, and math." But remember: "Posts are welcome from women and men and everyone in between if they focus on the topic of the Carnival."

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer. In academia in particular, summer is often a time when institutional responsibilities (teaching, committees) are at somewhat of a lull - still buzzing but less demanding than usual for most. One has much more time to devote to research and other scholarly efforts that may have come second to teaching and service during the primary academic year.

However, summer is also supposed to be a time for renewal, recharging, and reconnecting - an opportunity to take some time off and take care of yourself a little better, perhaps at least a little better than during Spring semester. The sun is out longer, you can spend more time with your family, get in a run after work, take a vacation at the beach or mountains - maybe even visit a foreign country. Perhaps you even mix work with pleasure and take advantage of a scholarly workshop in a great destination.

But competing with this concept is often the albatross of unfinished papers, the need for field research, new grant applications, summer students, and preparing for Fall academic responsibilities.

For example, there will be no summer vacation for the PharmFamily; perhaps not even more than a weekend away until at least Christmas. The first of July saw the beginning of a new training year for my better half, this week found our daughter starting her next grade as we are on a year-round elementary school schedule, and I am living in academic hell. We all need a vacation - badly. I personally need to get away from the heat and humidity for the dry air of Colorado and the intense colors of nature that only hypoxemia and the Rocky Mountain West can provide.

I recognize that not all past and prospective Scientiae contributors are in academia. But I know that all of us battle during the summer with what we need to do and what we want to do.

So, I propose the theme for the August Scientiae carnival is:

Summer days, driftin' away. . .

Consider how you balance the demands and pleasures of this season. Have you found ways to make progress on your must-dos while also taking time for your family, friends - and yourself - and being in the moment of this time of year? Or are July and August just another month for you?

And so as not to exclude our colleagues in the Southern Hemisphere (where I am fortunate to draw 5-7% of my blog visitors at Terra Sigillata), why don't you take this time from your winter and reflect upon how you will enjoy your summer?

I'll be hosting the July Scientiae Carnival over at My Middle Years. I've been reading many posts in the blog wide world about self-image, so lets find out how we in STEM see ourselves. The theme for this month is:

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall...

Think about who you see when you look in the mirror. How do you see yourself? How do you think others see you? Who would you rather see? Some days it might be hard to even face the mirror, other days you might stare at your teenage self looking back at you and wonder what happened since. What do you think that person looking at you is thinking? What would happen if you could step through the looking glass?

The images are infinite, and feel free to submit variations on the theme or anything else you view appropriate. Call for posts for the June Scientiae: Moving Forward

Hi, it's ScienceWoman, your host for the next edition of Scientiae. Alice and I are teaming up to host the June edition of Scientiae, the carnival by, for, and about women in science, engineering, technology, and math. As is the norm for the monthly Scientiae carnival, I get to choose a theme to help inspire and unite you all to write posts, though submissions on any topic related to women in STEM are always welcome.

At this time of year, some of us are just emerging from the end of the semester, while others still have another month to slog through before getting a reprieve. Some people are within spitting distance of finishing their research project or degree, while others feel like they have years more to battle cranky equipment or stare at disappointing data. While some of us maybe carefree and happy-go-lucky, others people may be struggling on the personal front.

We're all at different stages of our journeys, but something we have in common is that we are all MOVING FORWARD, so that's the theme of this Scientiae edition.

How are you moving forward in life? Are you close to your degree, tenure, sabbatical, or summer holiday? Is that paper almost ready to go out the door? Is your baby almost potty trained or are you training for a marathon? What keeps you moving forward in your science, work, and life? Is it the drive to cure a disease, make the world a more sustainable piece, or discover something that no one else knows? Is it the promise of exciting data at the end of a long assay? Is it the thought of people calling you Dr.? Is it your daughter's smile when she wakes up in the morning, or the enthusiastic tail wagging of your dog? When things get tough, how do you motivate yourself to move forward?

Here's a couple of sayings and cliches that might help inspire the creative juices:

"It's always darkest, just before they turn on the light." (Cole Porter, Anything Goes)

"When life hands you lemons, turn them into lemonade." (an old saying)

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going." (Alternatively, the sign in my local donut shop proclaimed "When the going gets tough, the tough get donuts.")

"Life is just a bowl of cherries." (A saying meaning that life is pleasant, but often used sarcastically to convey the opposite sense).

Now that you're all inspired(?), don't forget to write your entries and get them in by midnight UTC on May 30th, and I'll get them compiled and posted the first week of June. The May Scientiae Blog Carnival will be held at Endless Possibilities V2.0 over on Nature Network on or about the 1st of May.

I've always been intrigued by timecapsules. Those funny things that people bury under trees, in new buildings, in the ground, whenever something notable is happening. They contain photos, stuff that is soon to be an artifact, letters and other such timely reminders of the present day.

As I'm running a little short of time for a theme for the May Scientiae carnival, I'd like to propose "A Snapshot" as a theme. Create a blog time capsule for yourself that will say Spring 2009 when you look back on it in a couple of years.

You can interpret this in many ways. It could just be a series of pictures that describes your research or life this spring, or it could be an anecdote or moment that is memorable. It could be a snapshot of how your research is going, how your job search is progressing or just how your getting on.

And as I'm running short of time, I'll also accept general submissions on anything related to the themes of this carnival:

This is a blog carnival that compiles posts written about the broad topic of "women in STEM," (STEM=science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and may include posts:

stories about being a woman in STEM

exploring gender and STEM academia

living the scientific academic life as well as the rest of life

discussing how race, sexuality, age, nationality and other social categories intersect with the experience of being a woman in STEM

sharing feminist perspectives on science and technology

exploring feminist science and technology studies

Both men and women (and anyone in-between) are welcome to contribute to the carnival as long as the topics are relevant and respectful.

April: Rising to the Challenge

There is something to be said for overcoming adversity, whether in a personal or professional setting. Despite the fact that we all moan and groan about the various challenges in our lives (okay, well at least I moan and groan), those very challenges are responsible for shaping us and giving us incredible confidence once we overcome them.

For example, this past year I have struggled like an absolute nutjob to fit into the crazy environment of my postdoc lab. It was an enormous change and a challenge that had me ready to throw in the towel, but eventually I adapted. And I now cannot believe how much better off I am. Successful research in two very different labs has opened my eyes to new and interesting ways to solve problems, collaborate, and go about the greater scientific circle. I am a richer scientist for having gone through such a difficult professional experience.

But my observations are nothing new. Years and years ago, Winston Churchill laid out this gem: "If you're going through hell, keep going." I think that we can all agree that good ol' Winston Churchill knew what he was talking about.

So with that, dear readers, I give you April's scientiae theme:

Tell us about that most firey fire through which you have had to walk in your scientific career. How did you overcome the challenge? Did you have help along the way, or was it a solo effort? And what did you learn? Why are you a better scientist given the difficulties that you have encountered?

And people, I need not remind you that your contributions will be posted at the home of candor itself, so please don't feel as if you need to pull any punches. Lay it all out there for us.

I will be hosting the March Scientiae Carnival here on March 1st. In honor of the Anniversary Edition of Scientiae and Women's History Month, the theme for March is

Role Models of Women Making History.

During Women's History Month we tend to look backward and acknowledge the hard work and suffering that got us where we are today. For a change, let's acknowledge history in the making and the motivations that make it possible. Who are your role models? Who first got you interested in your field, or opened new doors for you? Who inspires you on a daily basis and makes you believe in the future of science, technology, or the world? I suspect that for many of us our role models are our mentors, our peers, our fellow bloggers, or maybe even our students. I want to know who inspires Women in STEM in the modern age.

Feel free to be as general or specific as you desire, or write about something completely different. Send your submissions by midnight on February 28th. Complete instructions can be found here, and I'll be posting the Carnival on March 1st.

What do you think a better, more equitable society should look like? What are your dreams for your life? For the lives of others? How close are you to living the life of your dreams? What would make you able to live that life?

It's 2009 – a year of hope and change and the next Scientiae Carnival is about hope and change—the hopes we have and the changes we would like. I've been reading ScienceWoman, Dr. Isis and even the 1841 Lowell Offering and their ideas have really gotten me thinking. Our dreams as to what society can and should be may not happen; but if we don't dream it, it surely won't happen. My hope is that the Carnival will get us all into the discussion, help us learn from each other and move us forward. Please tell us your dreams.

January Scientiae

December is the time that we prepare to close out one calendar year (or semester) and begin another. We stand on the threshold between the new and the old. As a way of honoring the transitional nature of this time of year, I’d like to challenge you to think about all the doors that you have opened and closed this year.

As one door closes, another one opens. Likewise, as one door opens, another one closes.

Sometimes you close a door by choice, knowing that the path it leads to is not the one you want to take. Some doors were closed before you got to them. What open doors did you find while searching for a new path to take? Perhaps you closed a door without intending to. Were you able to re-open that door? Or did you decide to leave what was done as done? Have you had to close one door in order to allow another one to open?

Feel free to write about a specific episode, or use this as an opportunity to look back on the entire year. Or write about something else entirely. Just send in your submissions by midnight on December 28. Complete instructions can be found here. I'll be hosting over at my place on New Year's Day.

Dr. Isis's Call for December Posts!

As dear blog friend skookie-pants recently announced, Dr. Isis is going to be hosting the December posting of Scientiae. This is one of Dr. Isis's favorite carnivals and it is usually absolutely full of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) hotness. Some of the women (and men) in the blogosphere Dr. Isis admires most participate in Scientiae and I feel like a total rockstar to get to host this month. Without further ado, here is this month's theme:

The next intended host for Scientiae was going to be lost clown, but she has let me know she can't do it. So I'm looking for someone to take over the Dec 1 carnival IMMEDIATELY -- the call for posts needs to be submitted and then the carnival compiled to be published for Dec 1. Please please please if you can help, email Scientiae directly. I'll send you a hosting guide, and be happy to answer any questions you have.

I am also looking for hosts for 2009 -- if you'd like to host Scientiae, please also email Scientiae along with months that would be good for you and I'll do my best to coordinate.

Hi everyone, Jane here again, your host for the November Scientiae. I just wanted to let you all know that there will be a bit of a delay in getting out the November Scientiae. You see, I'm sick. Really, really, really sick. And I need to get better. So I'm working on it. But that means that I have to let ~~some~~ most things slide until I get better, and unfortunately blogging falls into that category of "things that can slide". Please keep your submissions coming, and I will get the carnival out as soon as my health allows.

November Scientiae

Hi everyone, Jane here, host of the Scientiae Carnival for November 2008. As the weather cools down and the nights get longer, what better way is there to spend your time than curling up with your trusty computer and contributing a blog post to the next carnival? Ah, autumn.

But I digress. You all want to know what the next theme is, right? Well, I decided that we should do a holiday-type theme this time around, so the theme is:

TRICK OR TREAT!

You can interpret this whatever way you'd like, but here are some suggestions to get your creative juices flowing:

TRICK: What tricks have you learned in your career as a scientist---to be successful, to stay sane, to achieve balance? Have you felt "tricked" at all by something that's happened to you in school or in your career? Did someone trick you into studying science or math or computers in the first place, or into doing something you didn't believe you could do?

TREAT: Why do you find it a treat to be a scientist/mathematician/technologist/geek/nerd? What are the biggest treats in your job or in your studies? How do you hand out treats to others (i.e., mentoring, random acts of professional kindness)? Have you ever received, or given, a particularly special professional treat?

If there is not an October carnival, I will roll all of last month's submissions into this carnival. So those of you who submitted---thanks, and your efforts will be rewarded!

Posts should be submitted like so no later than 11:59pm EST on Thursday, October 30. The carnival will be posted sometime on November 1st or 2nd.

October Scientiae may be lost, but November Scientiae won't be

Everyone, I am not sure what happened to the October Scientiae. I know Jen has been dealing with a bunch of personal stuff, so she may have decided that dealing with Scientiae was too much.

So that we don't lose two months, I've just invited Jane of See Jane Compute to start the November Carnival. Depending on what we hear from Jen and what Jane is willing to do as host, those of you who submitted posts for October might have them rolled into the November, or there might be a much-delayed October carnival posted sometime. I'll let you know.

Thanks for your patience. After all, sometimes RL gets in the way of blogging, and blogging is supposed to be fun or helpful but can also be a burden. If you're so inclined, send a shout-out of good wishes to Jen as she struggles with her real life burdens.

Yes, believe it or not, I am in fact hosting a slightly belated October Scientae carnival, and I want to apologize to everyone for running so behind on this! Let me take the opportunity to ask you all to find your best general women in STEM blog posts and send 'em on in!

If you'd like some last-minute inspiration, here's a theme to get you going: being a good example even in a misstep. Personally, I discovered that I piled on way too much work to do this month, and was only partially successful in balancing it with other social and family responsibilities. I love to hold up examples of inspirational, successful STEM women, but do you have a good story about recovering gracefully from a mistake, or teaching yourself or others about how to make even a failure a success?

Please send in posts in the usual way by the end of this week, October 3, and I will post the carnival on the weekend.

September's Carnival

The theme for September's carnival is that favorite of all school teachers:

"My Summer Vacation".

Even for those not in education or with children, September means the end of summer so this Scientiae gives one more chance to look back over the summer to relive some enjoyable experiences, or assess how well we achieved our goals. Did we get everything done we had hoped? Did we have fun? Did any one go some where exotic or exciting?

You can write about anything to do with summer - for example, pick your best experience this year or talk about what summers and vacations mean to you in general. Feel free to use a post you have already posted; this year I have read some great summer vacation posts. As always, you are free to ignore the theme and write about anything to do with women in science and your posts will still be considered for Scientiae.

Please submit posts in the traditional manner by 8 am (EST) August 30th 2008. I am going to laboring over Scientiae over Labor Weekend [sorry couldn't resist] and I want it up by Sept 1 as I start teaching again Sept 2 [yah] and will not have any time after Labor Day.

I cannot wait to read your posts.

I can't believe August is almost here. When I signed up to host the next Scientiae Carnival, it seemed like August was so far away.

I'd like everyone to start thinking about contributions for the August Scientiae, which will be at Faraday's Cage is Where You Put Schroedinger's Cat. Right now, I'm thinking about transitions (since I finished my MS and will "sort of" be moving next month).

I thought this might be a good theme. I'd like to hear about other people's transitions. Some things to consider are

• What big (or small) transitions have happened in your life? Or are you anticipating a big transition?
• How did it affect you? (Physically, emotionally, psychologically, locationally..)
• What was the outcome?
• Did you handle it well? If so, how did it help? If not, what could you have done differently?
• What fears or hopes did you have? Did they come to be?

Feel free to elaborate or go beyond these points. Of course, if you don't like this topic, you're welcome to discuss anything else.
